AUTOMATIC was shot in Houston, Texas over a three week period in the summer of 2004. There were two additional shooting days in Los Angeles immediately following the Houston shoot.
Travis Schuldt, Jay Thames and Jonathan Walls began developing the story for what would become AUTOMATIC in the fall of 2002. With the early work of Steven Soderbergh, Todd Solondz and the legendary John Cassavetes being of very strong influence, Jay wrote (and re-wrote) the script over the course of the next year and a half. Most of the principal cast was in place throughout that process, and those early unscripted rehearsals led to some of the more interesting moments contained in the script, and ultimately on screen.
In 1996, JONATHON WALLS first directed, shot and edited his thesis video titled "Preserving Life: The Legacy Project." After receiving his undergraduate degree from St. Bonaventure University, Jon studied directing at the New York Film Academy. In 2000, he took his talents abroad where he shot and edited an historical documentary about an Indian community in Malaysia for the National History Museum of Singapore. He stayed in Asia to produce, shoot and edit an award winning series for MTV Asia titled "It's My LIfe." Recently he directed, shot and edited a music documentary titled "Playing for Change," now showing on The Sundance Channel. "Playing for Change" has played film festivals around the world, winning "Best of Fest" at the York International Film Festival in England and the Jury Prize at the AIFF in Agen, France. AUTOMATIC is his first narrative feature film.
TRAVIS SCHULDT (producer) is a founding member of the highly regarded Los Angeles theater company The Lone Star Ensemble. He has produced critically acclaimed productions of "Venus and Adonis" and "Cardenio" by William Shakespeare, "Albert Hall" by Amber Benson and "The Illusion" by Tony Kushner. AUTOMATIC is his first feature film production.
JAY THAMES (writer/producer) has produced the short films "In Arabia We'd All Be Kings," directed by Dylan Robertson and the short series "Episodes directed by Jonathan Walls. His script "p3" was sold to an independent producer in 2002, and he has worked with Ralph Winter (X-Men, X-Men 2, Fantastic Four) on an as yet untitled feature project. AUTOMATIC is his first feature film production.
